Navy Jets in Key West

Key West Air Show — The Southernmost Air Spectacular

Aviation enthusiasts descend on Key West every year for the Southernmost Air Spectacular. The whole island gets into it, and the entire weekend, you’ll hear and see amazing jets zooming over our normally quiet island oasis. The highlight for everyone is seeing the Navy’s Blue Angels return to the island for the show.

While the dates for the next show haven’t been announced yet, here’s a look at what’s in store for this year. So buckle up, Buttercup—let’s kick the tires and light the fires, and keep the pointy end forward and the dirty side down…and all those other things pilots say!

Navy Jets in Key West

What Is the Southernmost Air Spectacular?

Like any good air show, the annual NAS Key West southernmost air show features static displays, aerial combat demonstrations, performance flying stunts and tricks, and

Headlining the show each year is the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels. The only annual Blue Angels air show Key West has to offer, it’s a prime event that everyone on the island looks forward to. Even those who aren’t at the show at NAS Key West can see the Blue Angels’ F/A-18 Super Hornets zipping around the island.

The Blue Angels have been performing since 1946. They put on more than 60 performances annually at 30 different airshows for an estimated 11 million spectators. But, of course, the Key West air show is the best. These guys blasting over Duval Street and around the harbor is a sight to see!

The 2023 show featured:

  • C-17 Globemaster, a heavy transport aircraft from the 315th Airlift Wing in Charleston, SC
  • F-35A Lightning II next-generation fighter demonstration team
  • VFC-111 Sun Downers (Navy Reserve Adversary Squadron)
  • F-5N Tiger II supersonic demonstration
  • Blue Angels, F/A-18 Super Hornet demonstration team
  • Special Ops parachute demonstration team
  • NAS Key West search and rescue team demonstration
  • Multiple civilian aerobatic demonstrations

Static aircraft displays usually include more than 30 civilian and military aircraft from all branches. Plus, there are food and drink vendors, kid’s games, souvenir booths, and the Southernmost Car Club car show.

The exact exhibitors, schedule, demonstrations, and static displays change yearly. Check the show’s website for more details as they are announced.

Key West Air Show

Where Is the Air Show?

The show is at NAS Key West (Naval Air Station Key West).

Despite its name, NAS Key West is located a little north on Boca Chica Key. It isn’t at Key West International Airport, which confuses some people!

To get to the airshow, you’ll head toward the Navy buildings on Boca Chica Key, into the gate where you’d usually be told (by armed guards) to turn around. But on these two days a year, the field is open for the general public to come out and enjoy the show.

NAS Key West is located at Mile Marker MM 8 on Boca Chica Key. In past years, the gates typically open at 10 a.m., and the show starts at 11 a.m.

When Is the Key West Air Show?

Dates for the 2024 Southernmost Air Spectacular haven’t been announced yet. The show is held annually on a weekend in mid-April.

The Key West Air Show 2023 dates were held on April 15 and 16. The theme of that show was 200 Years of the Navy in Key West, to celebrate, well, 200 years of the Navy in Key West! What will the 2024 theme be? Only time will tell, but we can’t wait to see the Blue Angels flying over the island again.

Is There a Better Way to Watch the Air Show in Key West?

In town for the Key West air show, but want a better view than from a hot tarmac in the sun, squished with hundreds of strangers? Many locals enjoy watching the show from the sandbars and shallow waters around Boca Chica Key. We can’t pull up to the runway or anything, but they’re airplanes—you can see and hear them from all over the island.

Imagine sitting with your toes in the water and your ass in the sand, cold beer in your hand—all that, but with the mother-freaking Blue Angels blasting overhead! Call Captain Zak today and make plans for your private sandbar charter to watch the air show!
